Sergey Utochkin (1876-1916) is one of the pioneer pilots in Russia, soccer player, racing cyclist and motorist of the beginning of the 20the century. According to Utochkin, he played 15 sports! His outstanding scores in cycling (he won 14 races in Russia and abroad) matched his boxing, swimming, soccer and other activities. He also liked extreme sports: he got a car and drove it down Potyomkin Steps from the Boulevard to the port. He was one of the first Odessites to ride roller skates as well as a motorcycle.
However what Sergey adored was ballooning, later airplanes. In 1907 S.Utochkin rode a balloon. In 1910 he flew a Farman biplane. He made about 150 flights total and survived many crashes.
In the winter of 1915 S.Utochkin got a cold and died of pneumonia in St.Petersburg on the New Year Eve (in Russia it was on the 13th of January, 1916).
The monument to S.Utochkin was formally opened on the 2nd of September, 2001 in the Town Garden. The sculptor was A.Tokarev, the architect was V.Glazyrin. The sportsman seems to be thinking about his air planes…
There was a club of old car fans in Odessa in the USSR that was named after Utochkin. It was located at 28 Bazarnaya Street. After the collapse of the USSR it gradually ceased to exist.
