A listed building, the four star Londonskaya hotel was built in the early Italian Renaissance style by architect F.Boffo in 1826 through 1828 initially for prince Lopuhin. It became a hotel either in 1846 or 1847 when it belonged to Frenchman J.B.Karuta. As most of 'French' names had been taken by other hotels, he decided to turn to the English theme and gave the hotel this name.
Later the hotel had other owners: Volohov, Ralli, Anatra.
It was thoroughly rebuilt between 1899 and 1900 by architect Yu.Dmitrenko. The first Odessa hotel acquired the look it has up to date. The building was repaired last in 1988.
Many celebrities stayed in the hotel: Isadora Duncan, Georges Simenon, Marcello Mastroianni, Anton Chehov, Alexandr Kuprin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ivan Ayvazovskiy, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Marina Vladi, Montserrat Caballe and even a crowned head: Brasilian Emperor Don Pedro the 2nd.
Remains of an ancient settlement were found during the construction.
