Alexander Kuprin first visited Odessa in 1898 and came back many times. Many of the short stories written by him reflect the city atmosphere.

When he came here first, he stayed at the summer cottage of local author A.Fyodorov in a town called Lustdorf close to Odessa where he also met I.Bunin. They became friends. I.Bunin helped the guest to publish one of his stories in a local newspaper.

While staying in Odessa, A.Kuprin wrote a bunch of notable stories such as The Gambrinus, A Garnet Bracelet, Listrigons, Lenochka, The Circus and others. He also started to write the second part of The Pit novel.

A.Kuprin met S.Utochkin in Odessa. They rode a balloon together. Another pilot named I.Zaikin, gave A.Kuprin a ride on the Farman airplane.

There is a street in Odessa named after the writer.

The architects of the building are M.Linetskiy and S.Galperson. It was built in 1902.
