Archeology Museum

Description

The Museum was founded in Odessa back in 1825. The collection includes invaluable exhibits representing the ancient Black Sea area. Also the Golden Room is shown with a unique collection of coins as well as the Egyptian Room with mummies. Please note that the Golden Room is normally locked and you have to ask the attendants to let you in specially, but the admission is included in the cost of your ticket.

One of the exhibits is the oldest wheel in Europe.

Initially, the Museum was located in Kanatnaya Street in Blaramberg’s house. He was a collector of ancient coins and other items. He became the first director of the museum.

For a while (1883 through 1907) the Municipal Library was located here. Then it was a new building built the same year by G.Marazli for the Society of History and Antiquities. The architect was F.Gonsiorovskiy who made the project in the classical style. It looks like the library shared the building with the museum until it got its own home.

The Laocoon sculpture was put in front of the museum in 1927. It is a valuable marble copy of the ancient one of the 1st century BC which is in Vatikan. Initially it decorated Marazli’s mansion in Frantsuzskiy Boulevard. After the 1917 Revolution the mansion was nationalized and turned into a health center, and the sculpture was put in front of the museum. It is funny how the museum benefited from Marazli twice.
