Opera House

Description

The previous city theater was built in 1804-1809, but a fire completely destroyed it in 1873. The cause of the fire must have been gas lighting.

The new building was erected in 1887 in record terms of three years. The reason was simple: the contract read that each day of delay would cost a fine, and the amount was so high that a month delay would make a fortune. The project authors were Viennese architects F.Fellner and H.Helmer and they were influenced by Dresden Opera House.

There was a fire in this theater too, in 1925. When the Nazis were leaving Odessa they wanted to blow up the building, but Odessa Resistance prevented this horrendous crime. The building has been repaired many times, in particular in 1967. The last repair was completed in 2007.

Composers P.Chaykovskiy and S.Rahmaninov conducted at the theater. E.Caruso, F.Shalyapin, A.Nejdanova, L.Sobinov sang there, A.Pavlova and I.Duncan danced on the stage.

The acoustics is terrific.

Odessa Opera House is the most beautiful theater in Ukraine and one of the best worldwide. Forbes magazine included Odessa Opera House into the list of the most prominent sights in Eastern Europe.

The interior is even more striking than the outsides. The easiest way to enjoy it is to get a ticket for a performance. Actually, it is not overly expensive while the performances are usually very good. It is also possible to go on a tour but it is expensive.
